Last week's announcement that the Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Tel Aviv from May 14-18 has sent hotel prices skyrocketing in the city around those dates, website Hotels Combined reveals.
With 20,000 overseas visitors expected in the city for the event, hotels and tourist apartment owners have been hiking their prices by thousands of shekels. Hotels Combined compared prices for a couple to spend either the weekend before the Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv or the weekend of the event. They found a four-star hotel in Montefiore Street that put its weekend price up by 1,346% from NIS 990 to NIS 14,318.
Hotels Combined found a five star hotel in Rothschild Boulevard, which put its price up a more reasonable 145% from NIS 3,035 to NIS 7,390. An apartment rented out for short-stay tourists in Dvorah Hanavi Street hiked its price from NIS 5,183 to NIS 7,063.
Even youth hostels have got in on the act. A youth hostel in Levontin Street that would normally charge NIS 454 for a room with two beds has more than doubled the price to NIS 983.
Eli Segal from Hotels Combined said that the website takes bookings for 2,080 Tel Aviv hotels and vacation apartments.
Delegations from the various countries participating in the Eurovision Song Contest are expected to start arriving well before the first semi-final on May 4. The second semi-final will be on May 16 and the final on May 18 at the Expo Tel Aviv (International Convention Centre). Those without a ticket for the event can watch it on screens at Charles Clore Park on the seafront near Jaffa where the Eurovision village will be set up combining the contest broadcasts and live performances.
